Musical video clips on YouTube as a learning tool. Practical example in university teaching

2019

2022

The new Sicilian regional law on territorial government introduces a number of novelties in the urban planning debate of recent years. It places 'participation' among the fundamental principles underlying Sicily's spatial planning activities. The Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo has gained an extensive experience in the field of participatory practices, and to maintain this inclination it decided to create a memorandum of understanding with the City of Palermo. The first project activity that the protocol has produced is the "Lessons in Planning" project, which aims to promote the culture of urban planning with students of first and second-grade secondary schools of P…

Combining expert knowledge and models in participatory workshops with farmers to design sustainable weed management strategies

2020

International audience; In order to design cropping systems reconciling cropproduction, biodiversity and reduced herbicide use, weorganized participatory workshops with farmers in theChampagne region (North-Eastern France). Methodscombined cropping-system prototyping by farmers, expertopinion and models. In a first meeting, farmers determinedtheir objectives and constraints, and chose areference system existing in one of their farms (oilseedrape/winter wheat/winter wheat/spring barley heavilyinfested by autumnal grass weeds). In a secondmeeting, two sets of prototypes were designed by twoseparate groups, using the Mission Ecophyt’eau® tool(https://ecophytopic.fr/pour-aller-plus-loin/outil-m…

From real-life experience to map. Using landscape as a tool for decentralized urban planning

2010

International audience; The large diffusion of GIS is greatly improving the capacities of territorial analysis; yet these tools are increasing the weight of cartographic representations and the gap between the everyday's space and the space of town planning projects. GIS are certainly essential tools, but they require a reflection about their territorial effects. The maps of "intervisibility" which are produced this way are difficult to understand and address the issue of mediation. We propose to contribute to the reflection through experiments conducted in France. We successively used maps and photos within the framework of town planning projects; we are now able to propose a protocol whic…

Combating social exclusion of young people with ICT applications

2013

Social exclusion of young people is a major socio-economic challenge all over Europe. This paper discusses the development and use of ICT applications to tackle the problem. The paper begins with a review to existing research on the possibilities of the ICT in social inclusion of young people. Secondly, as a way forward, a multidisciplinary approach is suggested, which would combine perspectives from social sciences, information systems, human-computer interaction, information technology and electronic commerce. The suggested approach combines technological and economic parameters of ICT development with social factors related to well-being, quality of life, gender, cultural and social cond…
